Hello Pi Phis,
I hope that you are all having an amazing summer! Soon we will all be back at school and back into the swing of things. As you all know, recruitment is the second week of school (September 23rd-29th) so we have some busy and exciting times ahead of us! Other exciting things to look forward to include: renovations, a new set of girls moving into the house, frosh week, clubs days, sister events, workweek, and pledging new sisters after recruitment and COR!
Redecorating: August 23rd to 27th we will be giving the first floor of the house a face-lift. We are planning on doing the front garden, repainting the front room and chapter room, painting the base boards and door frames all over the first floor, painting the ceiling in the chapter room, painting the kitchen cupboards and getting some new furniture for those rooms. I would like to thank my mom, Jill Miner, for donating $2000 to the chapter for these renovations! I hope that everyone will pitch in as much as possible to help make our house beautiful!
I would like to thank House Corp, Johanna Holmes and Pauline Gauvin, for approving these changes and for all of their hard work. Also, I would like to give a big thanks to our amazing AAC members, Janel Quan and Ramona Kaminskas, for all of their hard work, support and commitment to our chapter.
Frosh Week: Frosh Week this year is Tuesday September 7th to Saturday the 11th and is an amazing opportunity to try to get more girls to come through recruitment. Not only is it an excellent time to wear your letters and show your Pi Phi pride, but it also a great time to support Panhellenic council. Panhel has a booth at all of the clubs days (at all seven of the individual college clubs days as well as the large clubs days) and they need volunteers to help get the word out about sororities and recruitment. If you are a Rho Gamma please remember that you should be disaffiliated from the house during frosh week as well as the week
of recruitment.
Moving into the house: This fall there is a whole new set of girls moving into the house (Alyssa, myself, Rabiya, Michelle, Marlies, Danielle, Jessica S and Jill). If you are one of those girls then you can move in on the first of September unless you have discussed an earlier date with the person who is living in your room right now. Also, please remember that if you plan to bring a fridge or air conditioner for your room that it does cost extra because of the excess electricity usage. We will be having a in-house girls meeting the first week of September to discuss house rules, designate kitchen and bathroom spaces and work on cleaning schedules.
Work Week: This is the first year that our chapter will be having a workweek and it will be the week before recruitment. During this time we will be preparing for recruitment doing things like making decorations, cleaning the house and practicing our recruitment skills. It will be tons of fun and will get us all even more pumped for recruitment!
Recruitment: Recruitment, as you all hopefully know, is September 23rd to 29th. Throughout the whole week we have a literacy/ book theme. Our Round 1 theme is Dr. Seuss and we will be wearing pink tees with an ‘Oh The Places You’ll Go’ theme. Round two is Alice in Wonderland and we will be wearing sundresses and it will be tea party-esque . Pref night will have a ‘Happily Ever After’ theme and as per usual, we will be wearing all white. Bid day we are going to have a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ‘Golden Ticket’ theme and we will be getting black tees with metallic gold writing saying “Pick the Phinest”. Also, during this week we will be having a fraternity visitor to help us out. She will be staying in the commuter room the whole week so if anyone wants to stay at the house that week then they should stay in a room with one of the girls (my floor is open to everyone who wants it). Our first pledging of our future sisters will be September 30th and then Monday October 4th starts our COBing. We have several sister events, exchanges, Monday night dinners and other things to recruit more women after PSR.
I hope you are all as excited for all of these things as I am!!
I would like to send out congratulations to all of our recent graduates: Liz, Chantal, Roya, Ashley, Nasra, and Janice! Several women will not be returning to the chapter in the fall (Amanda Chab, Amanda Haidaz, Katherine Gainor, Melissa, Shara and Kathereen) for various reasons but they all look forward to keeping in touch with us through email at onalpha@pibetaphi.org and they wont be far, as they all will still be living in Toronto!
I would also like to send congratulations to Tori who is our new VP Fraternity Development! Also, in the next week or so we willknow who our next VP Finance is, so congratulations to her in advance!
All of exec has been continuing their hard work thought the summer. Danielle is doing an amazing job updating the website http://www.pibetaphi.org/pibetaphi/utoronto/, it has already gotten a facelift and will soon be fully updated, so go and check it out! We are trying to start a ‘Pi Phis All Over the World’ album, so if you have any pictures of you in your Pi Phi shirt traveling outside of Toronto then send it into her! Danielle is also working hard with Katie to plan for an amazing upcoming recruitment. Rabiya recently held a book sale with the Boys and Girls Club, which went well. Jessica S is continuing to work hard to keep the house in good shape. Even though Alyssa is far away she continues to keep in touch with Panhel and prepare for recruitment. Michelle and Jessica L are also working hard to get ready for the year. All of this hard work is helping our chapter get closer and closer to a good ranking on the chapter evaluation!
We are already off to a promising start for the year and I cannot wait to see you
all again and to get lots of new sisters this fall!
PPL&M,
Kelsey Miner
